When Jesus Christ was born, the entire known World was under control of the Romans. And the Romans were ruled by one strong man, Ceaser..... There was only one country on the map,  Rome. Every one else lived in the  “Roman Empire” and were ruled by Roman citizens. Ceaser was the master leader.... He was treated like a “God man”...

All through the  Roman Empire there was law and order. There had to be. For any disagreement was quickly crushed by the Roman soldiers...  Roman tax collectors were everywhere too.  In the fields taking crops to feed the soldiers, at the markets taking money from the merchants to send to Ceaser,  even in homes taking the cloth women had made so Romans could have clothing....   There were Roman recruiters sent out to find deformed people to force into the circus. So Romans would be entertained and amused.... And there were many Roman executioners stationed around the empire to put an end to anyone who didn't want the Romans ruling their land....  During Jesus' life, every person was basically alive to serve Ceaser.

Life was cheap. If you thought differently, you were persecuted. If you came from certain tribes, you were sold into Roman slavery. And the killing of a non Roman was no big deal.

Then suddenly Jesus from Galilee came along. A fearless man, who preached that Ceaser was not God......  And Jesus offered a new religion in which each man could walk upright and bow to none but his own God.... And each man was equal. “What you have done to the least of my brothers, you have done to me”....

So a new light came into the world. A good light. An empowering light for all the oppressed....  And the Romans and their allies became afraid. They were happy in power. They didn't want to give it up.. So they tried to stop this man, who was preaching that Ceaser was not God. Only God is God. And all people are God's children equally. The most simple peasant was a child of God, just like Ceaser.

But this light of freedom and equality spread around the empire fast. And this truth began to set men free.... Those in power tried to kill this light. And return back to the dark world, where people served only Ceaser, Rome and their allies..... They killed Jesus, but not the light. And as Paul the apostle would go on to preach for the rest of his life,  "Stand strong in Spiritual Liberty and never again let any man like Ceaser and any empire like Rome, dominate you as though they are your God."

And never again, in the known world could a leader or an empire come along and demand to be treated as God. Because Jesus Christ taught that no man can ever dominate you and claim to be your God. No man can ever come between you and your God..... And 2,000 years later we are still all blessed by his light.
